Dawn Shadforth interview

Who in your opinion uses music videos to full advantage?

I really like Queens Of The Stone Age. Their videos really grab my attention...I've never seen QOTSA live, but I love the way that they play and that's just from seeing their videos.

How powerful is the music video?

You don’t always get to go and see bands play live. Seeing them on TV shows is not the same; you can’t define the image the way you can with a music video. Right now, it’s the way people remember an artist and the way they perform. The image that they have in their heads isn’t of CD:UK or seeing a band live.

If you had to pick a director who is constantly producing great work, who would it be?

For me it’s always been [Michel] Gondry. I just love his work... I think he’s a genius. It's just the way his mind works…you look at his videos and you think ‘how??’. It’s incredible the way he’s worked everything out, the amount of thought that’s gone into them and yet how instant they are for the viewer... I think he’s brilliant.

What do you make of directors who mass produce music videos?

I don’t’ know how they do it. It doesn’t tend to happen here, as much as in America. There are people who make quality video products and just keep making them. I think they make videos that do the job for the artist. That’s what they make them for. They have a machine of people working around them. I don’t know if I could work that way. It’s just people working in different ways, but they tend to follow a formulaic way of making music videos which is fine because it does the job that the record company need it to do and the artist need it to do, but it doesn’t make for pushing the boundaries in making exciting, groundbreaking work.
